Overview
This article walks through how to remove a student from a section in Subject.
This workflow only applies to schools on a Manual or Hybrid integration. If your school is on a Full integration, section assignments are controlled by your district's SIS, and you won't see these options in Subject. In that case, section changes need to be made in your SIS by your district or SIS administrator.
Steps
Step 1: Create an archive section (recommended)
Before removing students, we recommend first setting up an archive section for your school. This gives you a dedicated place to move students you no longer need active in your regular sections — for example, students from a previous year who no longer need to be in Subject — without losing their enrollment history. Keeping an archive section on hand helps keep your active sections organized.
To create one:
Click the section dropdown in the top-left of your Educator Portal.
Select New Section.
Give it a clear name (e.g., "Archive Section") and save.
Step 2: Clear the student's enrollments in that section
A student can't be removed from a section while they still have active enrollments tied to it. If you try to remove a student who still has enrollments, you'll see an error message telling you to resolve those enrollments first.
From the student's profile, go through each of their enrollments in that section and choose one of the following for each:
Remove the enrollment — if the student no longer needs that course at all.
Move the enrollment to your archive section — if you want to keep the enrollment active/on record (for example, if the student might retake the course later) without it cluttering your regular section view.
Repeat this for every enrollment the student has in the section until none remain.
Step 3: Remove the student from the section
Once all of the student's enrollments in that section have been removed or moved to your archive section:
Go to the student within the section.
Click Remove student from section.
Confirm the removal.
The student will no longer appear in that section.
Quick recap: (1) Create an archive section, (2) remove or move all of the student's enrollments out of the section, (3) remove the student from the section.
