What Is Reading Level Support?

Reading Level Support allows you to adjust the reading level of course content for individual students directly within Subject. When enabled, the platform rewrites lesson text to match the selected grade level, making content more accessible without changing the learning objectives or course structure.

You can configure a reading level anywhere from 3rd grade through 12th grade on a per-student basis, and you have control over whether the student is automatically shown the adjusted content or given the choice to toggle it on or off themselves.

📚 Available courses: Reading Level Support is currently available for Science, Math, and History & Social Sciences courses.

Step 1: Enable Reading Level Support for Your School (Admin Only)

Before any educator can configure reading levels for students, an admin must first turn the feature on at the school level.

  1. Go to Settings

  2. Select Additional Settings

  3. Toggle on Reading Level Adjustments

Once this is enabled, educators at your school can begin configuring reading levels for individual students.

Step 2: Set a Reading Level for a Student (Educator)

Once the feature is enabled at the school level, you can configure it for any student from their profile in the Roster.

  1. Go to the Roster and locate the student

  2. Click into their profile and open Account Overview

  3. Navigate to Accommodations

  4. Click Edit

  5. Toggle on Add Additional Reading Level Support

  6. Select the appropriate reading level for the student (3rd–12th grade)

  7. (Optional) Choose whether the student should be defaulted into the lower reading level automatically, or whether they can toggle it on or off themselves

  8. Click Save

⏱️ A note on timing: If reading level adjustments have already been created for that course and grade level, your student will be able to see them immediately. If they need to be generated for the first time (for example, it's the first time a reading level has been set for that course, or a new version of the course has been deployed), it typically takes 10–30 minutes to process, though it could take up to a couple of hours if there's high demand. We recommend setting reading levels ahead of a student's next session rather than right before they log in. If it's been more than a couple of hours, reach out to our support team.

What the Student Experience Looks Like

Once the adjusted content is ready, here's what students will see depending on how you've configured the setting:

  • If the student is defaulted into the reading level: The adjusted text will display automatically when they open a lesson. No action required on their part.

  • If the student has the option to toggle: They'll see a toggle on eligible lessons that lets them switch between the standard and adjusted versions. The text on their screen updates instantly when they toggle.

The student-facing toggle uses encouraging, neutral language which does not display the specific grade level to the student.

How to Turn Off Reading Level Support for a Student

You can update or remove a student's reading level at any time by following the same steps above and toggling off Add Additional Reading Level Support, or by changing the grade level selection. Don't forget to save your changes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Does this change the course content permanently?
No. Reading Level Support adjusts how the content is displayed to a specific student. The underlying course content is unchanged for all other students.

Q: Why isn't the toggle showing up for my student yet?
If this is the first time a reading level has been set for this course, Subject needs to generate adjusted content, which typically takes 10–30 minutes, but could take up to a couple of hours if there's high demand on our end. The toggle will appear lesson by lesson as content becomes available. If it's been more than a couple of hours, please reach out to our support team.

Q: Which courses support Reading Level adjustments?
Currently, Reading Level Support is available for Science, Math, and History & Social Sciences courses. We're working to expand availability to additional subjects in the future.

Q: Will the reading level apply to all courses a student is enrolled in?
The adjusted content is generated per course. When you set a reading level for a student, Subject will generate adjustments for their enrolled courses that support this feature. If a student is added to a new course later, the adjustment will need to generate for that course as well.

Q: Can I set reading levels for multiple students at once?
At this time, reading levels must be configured one student at a time from each student's individual profile. Bulk configuration is something we're actively working on for a future update.

Q: Will the student know their content has been simplified?
The toggle language is intentionally kept neutral and encouraging. It does not tell the student what grade level their content has been set to.

Q: Does this work on all content types?
Reading Level Support works on the text-based content within lessons: including instructions, explanatory text, and questions. At this time, PDF-based content is not supported for reading level adjustments.

Q: Can students turn the reading level off themselves?
Only if you configure it that way. When setting the reading level, you have the option to either default the student into it (so it's always on) or allow the student to toggle it on and off. If you choose the default option, the student will not see a toggle.

Q: What if the adjusted content doesn't seem right for a particular lesson?
If you notice the quality of adjustments seems off for a specific lesson or course, please let your Subject support team know and share the specific example. This feedback is valuable and helps us continue improving the feature.

Tips for Getting the Most Out of Reading Level Support

  • Set reading levels proactively. If adjustments haven't been generated yet for a course, it can take anywhere from 10 minutes to a couple of hours. Configure a student's reading level well before their next scheduled session.

  • Use the toggle option for student agency. For students who benefit from choosing their own support, enabling the student-facing toggle can increase engagement and ownership of their learning.

  • Combine with other accommodations. Reading Level Support works alongside Subject's other student accommodations (such as reduced answer choices and additional attempts) for a more complete support plan.

  • Check back after setting. Preview a lesson after the generation window to confirm the toggle is appearing as expected before the student's session.
