Exempting Assignments for Students
Educators can use the new Exemptions feature to remove specific lessons, assignments, tests, or quizzes from a student’s course experience.
When an item is exempted, it is completely removed from the student’s view and does not count toward their grade or course progress.
What does it mean to exempt an assignment?
Exempting an assignment means:
The assignment is no longer visible to the student anywhere in their course
It is removed from the student’s To Do list
It does not count toward their grade
It does not impact course progress or completion
This allows educators to adjust coursework without negatively affecting a student’s performance or ability to complete the course.
When should I use exemptions?
Exemptions are useful when:
A student should skip specific content
You need to differentiate instruction
You are supporting credit recovery or modified pacing
A student has accommodations (IEPs, schedule changes, etc.)

Exemptions in Credit Recovery Courses
Exemptions work slightly differently in Credit Recovery courses.
Educators can only exempt entire topics, not individual assignments
Exempting a topic will remove all content within that topic, including:
Lessons
Assignments
Quizzes
For example, exempting “Topic 1.1” will remove everything within that topic for the selected student(s).
What’s the difference between Exempting and Locking?
Exempting removes the assignment completely from the student experience and from grading/progress calculations
Locking keeps the assignment visible and included in grading, but prevents the student from accessing it
Use Exemptions when you want the assignment to no longer exist for the student. Use Locking when you want to temporarily restrict access.
