Why does inviting or logging in a student say their email is already in use?

Explains that an "email already in use" error usually means the student already has an account at a different Subject school, and that only Support can transfer the account.

Why Does Inviting or Logging In a Student Say Their Email Is Already in Use?

If a student's email shows as "already in use" when you try to invite them — and they also can't log in, even though they don't appear anywhere on your school's roster — this almost always means the student already has a Subject account tied to a different school.

Accounts and emails are unique across the whole Subject platform, not just within one school. So a student who previously attended (or is currently enrolled at) another Subject school will hit this error at a new school, even though your own roster search comes back empty.

This Isn't Something Educators Can Fix

Only Subject Support can transfer a student's account from one school to another — there's no self-service option for this in the Educator Portal.

What to Do

Contact Subject Support through Live Chat or [email protected], and let them know the student's email is already registered to another school. Support will handle transferring the account over to your school.
