Overview

From the Educator Portal, you can lock assignments to control student access. Locking lets you administer tests securely, restrict access outside of class time, and customize coursework for your students.

When and Why to Use Locking Features

Locking serves two main purposes. Practically, it prevents access to certain materials, like exams or instructor-only assignments. Educationally, it lets you customize each student's progress path — for example, having them focus on key assessments or skip ahead when appropriate. This flexibility helps you accommodate different learning styles and support individual academic goals.

1) Decide who you're locking assignments for before you begin. Locking through Settings can affect a single section or every section in the school, depending on what's selected. This is intentional, but it's important to confirm the right scope before making changes.

  • To lock or unlock assignments for an individual student or a specific section, select that section from the dropdown in the top left.

  • To lock or unlock assignments at the school level, select All Sections from the same dropdown. Changing locking settings while All Sections is selected will affect every teacher's sections, not just your own.

2) Once you've selected the right scope, click Settings in the left-hand navigation.

3) This opens the Course Settings page. Select Locking, then use the Courses tab to choose a specific course, or the Students tab to lock or unlock assignments for an individual student. If the Students tab isn't showing, you likely haven't selected a specific section yet — see Step 1 above.

4) Choose the lesson and assignment.

  • Click a lesson on the left to lock the entire lesson, including every assignment nested within it. In the example below, we're locking full topics this way.

  • Use the dropdown arrow on the right to select and lock specific assignments instead of an entire lesson. In the example below, we're locking only the 0.1 A1 assignment.

  • A common use case is locking every quiz or exam in a course at once. Use the small caret on the left and select All Exams or All Quizzes to do this quickly.

5) Save your changes.

Review your selections, then click Save Changes to apply them.
