Overview
Teachers can now record a score for an assignment when a student has not submitted any work through the platform. This feature supports common classroom scenarios such as marking missing work as zero, awarding credit for offline or paper-based assignments, or recording scores for alternative assessments completed outside the platform.
This update is especially helpful for schools using blended learning models, where instruction and assessment may happen both digitally and on paper. Teachers can now grade work completed outside the platform while keeping the gradebook complete and accurate in Subject.
When a teacher manually enters a score, the system creates a standard submission record that is clearly flagged as teacher-created.
What This Feature Allows Teachers to Do
With this update, teachers can:
Enter a score for assignments that have no student submission
Close out gradebooks when students did not submit digitally
Record grades for work completed offline or outside the platform
Optionally include a note explaining why the score was entered manually
This feature ensures grades appear consistently across the gradebook, reports, and exports.
How Teachers Can Add a Score
Teachers can add scores for unsubmitted assignments from two locations in their Educator Portal:
Scorebook
Click an empty cell for a student and assignment
Select the option to add a score
Performance
View an individual student’s assignments
Add a score to an assignment with no submission
Adding a Score
When adding a score for an unsubmitted assignment:
Select an assignment item with no existing submission
Enter a numeric score
(Optional) Add a comment explaining the manual score
Choose whether the comment is visible to the student using Show comment to student
The system closes all remaining attempts or retakes for that assignment item
The score appears in the gradebook and in all reports and exports
For this initial release, entering a score finalizes the assignment for that student.
Viewing Teacher-Created Submissions
Teacher-created submissions are clearly labeled.
When viewing one of these submissions:
A banner indicates “This submission was added by a teacher”
The page displays the score, date, and any teacher note
Student work artifacts are not present, since no work was submitted
Removing a Score (Undo)
Teachers can undo a manually entered score.
If a score was added by a teacher:
A Remove Score option is available
Removing the score deletes the teacher-created submission
Retry attempts are restored to their default value
The student can submit work normally again, if desired
Important Notes
Manual scores cannot be edited directly in this version
Scoring for in-progress (unsubmitted or pending) assessments will be addressed in a future release and is not included at this time. If a submission is currently pending or in progress by a student, scores are not currently able to be submitted for those assignments. The student must submit the assignment before the grade becomes alterable by the teacher..
To change a manual score, the teacher must remove it and re-enter a new score
Teacher-created submissions are tracked separately from student submissions
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I add a score for a student who never submitted anything?

Does adding a score close future attempts or retakes?

Can students see that a score was added by a teacher?
Teacher-created submissions are labeled in the system. Teachers can also choose whether to show an optional comment to the student.
Can I edit a manual score later?

What happens if I remove a manually added score?
The teacher-created submission is deleted, retry attempts are restored, and the student can submit work normally.
