Video Overview:

Teachers and Admins can now customize Course Progression Settings at the Section level, not just the School level. This update gives schools more flexibility to meet real classroom needs while keeping settings clear, consistent, and easy to manage. This replaces our old process, where only Subject’s internal team could make these adjustments.

With this update, you can:

  • Set progression rules at either the School or Section level

  • See which settings are inherited from the School vs. which have been overridden

  • Reset any Section-level changes back to the School default

How the New Settings Work

Course progression settings now follow a parent → child structure:

  • School-Level Settings act as the parent default.

  • Section-Level Settings inherit the school’s defaults unless you override them.

For every setting, you’ll clearly see:

  • The current active setting

  • Whether it is the default

  • Whether it has been changed at the Section level

  • A quick option to reset to the School default

Note: This update does not include a history of who changed settings or when.

Available Course Progression Settings

Each of these settings can now be controlled at the School or Section level.

1. Score-Based Progression

Requires students to earn a minimum passing score before moving forward.

What you can customize:

  • Whether score-based progression is ON/OFF

  • The passing score threshold

Student experience:

  • If ON, future lessons/quizzes appear locked until the required score is met.

  • Students who don’t meet the threshold will be prompted to retry or talk to their teacher.

2. Diagnostic Bypass

Controls whether students must take the diagnostic exam or can skip forward.

What you can customize:

  • Whether the bypass option is ON/OFF

  • Threshold score for bypassing the diagnostic

Student experience:

  • Students will always start the diagnostic.

  • If bypass is ON and they score above the threshold, they’ll see an option to skip ahead.

3. Sequential Learning

Requires students to complete coursework in a specific order.

What you can customize:

  • Toggle sequential learning ON/OFF

Student experience:

  • Future lessons appear locked with a blue badge:
“Locked for Now — Come Back Soon”

  • Students will see a link that takes them to the earliest incomplete lesson.

How to Adjust Course Progression Settings

For Admins

Admins can update settings at either the School or Section level.

School-Level Settings

  1. Log in as an Admin.

  2. Navigate to Course Manager > School Settings.

  3. Adjust any of the three progression settings:

    • Score-Based Progression

    • Diagnostic Bypass

    • Sequential Learning

  4. Save changes.
These become the default for all Sections unless a teacher/admin overrides them.

Section-Level Settings

  1. From the Course Manager, open the dropdown of Sections in the top left hand corner of the Educator Portal.

  2. Select the Section you want to update.

  3. Open the Course Progression tab.

  4. Adjust the progression settings as needed.

  5. Click Save or Reset to Default if you want to revert to School settings.

For Teachers

Teachers do not have access to school-wide settings but can update progression settings for their own Sections.

To adjust settings as a Teacher:

  1. Make sure your section is selected in the sections dropdown in the top left.

  2. Go to Course Manager

  3. Click Course Progression Settings.

  4. Toggle settings ON/OFF or adjust thresholds.

  5. Save your changes or reset to default.

Real-Time Updates for Students

Any change you make (admin or teacher) updates instantly for students. Locked items, thresholds, and sequential requirements update as soon as the setting is saved.

FAQ

Q: Do we keep a history of who changed what setting and when?

A: No, the system does not currently log change history.

Q: Can I set these settings for an individual student?

A: Not directly. However, you can place a student into a new Section and customize the settings for just that Section.

Q: Do Section settings override School settings?

A: Yes. Any Section-level change replaces the School default for that Section only.

Q: How can I see settings across all Sections?

A: Admins can view this in the Course Manager. Teachers can view settings for their Sections under Roster > Sections.
