Overview
Session Logs allow teachers to track student engagement and learning activity across Subject courses. With this new feature, you can see when students are actively working, how much time they’re spending on specific lessons or sections, and where idle or review time occurs.
Session Logs are designed to give educators deeper visibility into how, when, and where students are engaging with their coursework, so you can provide timely support and better understand each learner’s study patterns.
Accessing Session Logs
Log in to your Educator Portal.
Navigate to your roster page, and search for the specific student you'd like to see Session logs for.
Once you click into that student's account, you can select the Session Logs tab located between Enrollments and Account Overview.
Use filters (by timeframe, course, or tasks) to narrow down what you want to view.
What You’ll See in a Session Log
Each log gives you a breakdown of active, idle, and review time — showing when and how long a student was engaged on Subject.
Category | Description |
Active Time | Time spent learning within a lesson (e.g., watching videos, completing quizzes, reading assignments). Any keystroke, click, or scroll is counted as active engagement. After 15 minutes of inactivity, an “Are you still here?” prompt appears. |
Review Time | Time spent looking over feedback, scores, or previously submitted work. |
Idle Time | Time when a student is logged in but inactive. If no activity is detected for 15 minutes, the idle prompt appears. After one hour of inactivity, the system logs the student out. |
You can also see Session Buckets — time windows that show when a student was working on the platform.
Blue highlights indicate the student is currently active (accurate within ~5 minutes).
This helps teachers spot work patterns and understand when students tend to be most engaged.
Downloading Reports
Two new report options are available from the Session Logs page:
1. Session Log Download
Download a CSV or PDF of all completed activities with timestamps.
Filters applied in the interface carry over to the download.
Ideal for detailed record-keeping or troubleshooting specific student sessions.
2. Enhanced Progress Report
Progress Reports now include time-on-course metrics.
Combines overall course progress with engagement time, giving a fuller picture of learning habits and pacing.
Data Notes and Limitations
Time Discrepancy Between Reports
You may notice small differences between in-app session data and Looker-based reports.
These come from different data sources and may vary slightly during the initial rollout.
The data teams are actively working to align the two views.
Historical Data Limitation
Time tracking began on October 7, 2025.
Any enrollments that started before this date will show incomplete or missing data for earlier sessions.
Best Practices for Educators
Review Session Logs weekly to monitor engagement trends.
Use Session Buckets to identify when students tend to work most often (for scheduling support or check-ins).
Pay attention to idle time patterns — high idle time may signal confusion, distraction, or technical issues.
Combine Session Logs with Progress Reports to track both engagement and mastery.
Use download reports before parent or student meetings to illustrate study habits and progress.
FAQ
Q: How frequently are Session Logs updated?
A: Session activity is tracked continuously and updates in near-real-time (within ~5 minutes).
Q: Why does time data differ between reports?
A: Session Logs and Looker Reports pull from different data systems. Small variances are expected until data sources are fully aligned.
Q: Can I download historical logs for all students?
A: You can download logs for active enrollments. Sessions before October 7, 2025 will not include full time-tracking data.
Q: What’s considered “active” vs “idle” time?
A: Active time is counted when students interact (scroll, click, type, or watch a video). After 15 minutes of inactivity, the “Are you still here?” modal appears. If no interaction happens for one hour, that time is marked idle and the student is logged out.
